A-Board Pavement Signs That Bring Passing Trade Through Your Door

Most people walking past your shop don't look up. They look straight ahead. That's exactly where a good A-board sits.

A pavement sign right in someone's path is one of the cheapest, simplest ways to turn a passer-by into a customer. Today's special, a weekend offer, "Open", or just an arrow pointing round the corner. People see it, stop and walk in.

We make printed A-board pavement signs for shops, cafes, salons, pubs and businesses across the UK, in our own High Wycombe workshop. Choose a complete A-board with your design, or replacement printed panels for a frame you already have. Send us your logo or your wording, and we'll check it for free and send you a proof.

What Are A-Board Pavement Signs?

An A-board is a free-standing pavement sign shaped like the letter A. Two panels lean together at the top and open out at the bottom, so it stands on its own and can be read from both directions.

You'll hear them called lots of things: A-boards, pavement signs, pavement boards, A-frame signs, sandwich boards or pavement display boards. They're all the same handy sign, and you'll see them outside almost every independent shop and cafe in the UK.

The best part? You put it out in the morning, bring it in at night, and change the message whenever you like.

Our A-Board Options

1. Printed A-Board Pavement Signs

A complete sign, ready to go. A sturdy frame with your design printed in full colour on both sides. Just unfold it and put it out.

2. Heavy Duty and Swing Pavement Signs

On a windy corner or a very busy street? A heavy duty pavement sign with a weighted base, or a swinging sign on springs, won't blow over every time a lorry goes past.

3. Snap Frame A-Boards (Poster Changers)

Change your message in seconds. Snap frame A-boards have clip-open edges, so you can slide in a new printed poster for each offer, event or season. Great for cafes, estate agents and shops that change their promotions often.

4. Replacement A-Board Panels and Inserts

Already have a frame? We'll print new panels to fit it, so you can freshen up a tired sign without buying a whole new one. Just tell us the size. We print on tough, weatherproof materials such as Foamex, Correx inserts or long-lasting Dibond signs for frames that stay out all year.

5. Chalkboard and Wipe-Clean A-Boards

Want to write a new special every day? A branded chalkboard or wipe-clean panel lets you keep your logo printed at the top and change the menu underneath. Perfect for cafes, pubs and restaurants.

6. Wooden and Metal Sandwich Boards

Prefer a traditional look? Wooden sandwich boards suit pubs, delis and boutiques. Aluminium and metal sandwich boards are light, tough and modern.

Design Tips for A-Boards That Get People Inside

  • One message per board: "2 coffees for £5" beats a list of ten things. People read A-boards in about three seconds.

  • Big, bold words: Your main line should be readable from the other side of the street.

  • Give a reason to come in now: A deal, a new product, today's special or "free Wi-Fi" works better than just your name.

  • Use both sides: Show the same message both ways, or use each side for a different direction of foot traffic.

  • Add an arrow: If you're round a corner or upstairs, a clear arrow does half the work.

  • Match your shopfront: Use the same colours and logo as your sign above the door, so people connect the two instantly.

No design? Send us your logo and wording, and we'll put together a clean, readable layout for you to approve.

Do You Need Permission for a Pavement Sign?

Often, yes. Placing an A-board on a public pavement usually needs permission from your local council, and many councils issue a pavement licence or have rules about size and position. Some areas have banned A-boards altogether to keep pavements clear.

As a rule of thumb:

  • Keep a clear path: Leave plenty of room for wheelchairs, pushchairs and people with sight loss to pass safely.

  • Stay close to your shop: Most councils expect the sign to sit right against your shopfront.

  • Bring it in at night: Pavement signs should only be out while you're open.

  • On your own land: If the sign stands on your own forecourt rather than the public pavement, the rules are usually simpler.

Check with your local council before you put a sign out. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

How Much Do A-Boards Cost?

The price of your pavement sign depends on:

  • Size: A1 is the most popular. A2 costs a little less, and larger boards a little more.

  • Frame type: Standard frames are the most affordable. Heavy duty, swinging and wooden frames cost more.

  • Print: Single or double-sided, and how many panels you need.

  • New frame or panels only: Replacement panels for your existing frame are the cheapest option.

Looking for cheap pavement signs that still look professional? A standard A1 frame with printed panels gives you the best value. Send us your details for a clear, no-obligation price.

Ready to Stop People in Their Tracks?

Why A-Boards Work So Well

They sit at eye level

Your shop sign is above people's heads. An A-board is right in front of them.

They catch people on foot

Pavement advertising boards are perfect for busy high streets, where most of your customers are walking past, not driving.

They point the way

Tucked down a side street, upstairs or round the back? An A-board at the end of the road tells people you're there.

They're cheap to run

Pay once and use it every day for years. Just swap the poster or panel when your offer changes.

They make you look open

A smart pavement sign outside tells people you're open, welcoming and worth a look.
